Writing an article review
Today I will do my first article review ever for the subject of Interdisciplinary Design Research. I have printed my articles and I am reading over them continuously in between jobs at work. It is a lot of information to process. The area of research I have chosen is design management because I would like to go into this area of study and research. Design management is a new subject and it incorporates the integration of various disciplines which can be interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary.
We are living in a world where the quality and effectiveness of products and services are informed by the needs they satisfy. Needs can only be satisfied by acknowledging the concerns of partners who rely on or use the products or services they are made for. These partners constitute various segments of society across various levels of professions, class structures and cultures thus making their needs complex. Complex problems require the attention of professionals or practitioners who can provide multiple solutions in addressing these problems. For this reason a combination of disciplines need to be utilised and understood in order to appropriately solve the problems we face in an ever evolving world. Problems and needs are evolving and the so it is only natural that the capabilities required to meet these needs should evolve too. For this to happen practitioners of different disciplines need to work together so that they can learn from each other and combine their strengths to address the complex nature of issues faced by society. This type of collaboration fosters unity and trust among professionals and practitioners. When we understand what our needs are across the board we can find the right solutions and the most efficient way to solve those solutions.
This area of design management where various disciplines are required to work together for the greater good ties in with the subject of Service Innovation Design and Citizenship. In this subject we are expected to engage with students from all creative disciplines and find problems to solve that affect us. Aided by our experience and knowledge of our undergraduate degrees as a base, we are equipped to bring proven skills to the table and this collaborative partnership encourages a cross disciplinary approach to solving complex problems which we all face on a daily basis. The benefits of such a partnership encourages the sharing of knowledge, cultivates and an industry of learning and growing and informs future challenges on a framework that is proven to assist in meeting the needs of the people. This is all new to me and I am thoroughly enjoying the interconnectedness of the postgraduate diploma I am studying. I am also seeing potential Master's degree topics forming. Often I am realising how even though we live in a world that is technologically advanced, and resources are more readily available, there are still barriers to entry for many to enjoy these necessities. The nature of a cross disciplinary approach to management can't be realised without properly sharing, understanding and trusting all partners involved. For solutions to be effective this culture needs to be able to filter down the various channels that make up a framework. From concept to production.
The other challenge for me is balancing my time across work, studies and family life. This is a subject on it's own and I am always learning how these 'disciplines' inform and support each other. Similar to the way my class mates worked on a collage project addressing the needs of the present, informed by the past to live in the future, my movement through this diploma is also constantly evolving.
